Can you share a bit about your journey and how you got started in the world of tattooing?
"I’ve always done art from a young age, started doing designs and artworks for friends. One of those designs was tattooed on one of these friends by local Artist that eventually offered me an apprenticeship. My journey from creating art for friends to having a design tattooed and getting an apprenticeship offer from a tattoo artist is what kickstarted my artistic career."
How do you handle client consultations to ensure their vision aligns with your artistic interpretation?
"I will sit down with client and have a chat about what their vision for the tattoo and if they have any references material and then what kind of styles they like. Once we have a basis for the design, I will usually run the client through what to expect if they are a first time client. I prioritize clear communication and transparency throughout the entire tattoo design process to ensure client satisfaction."
In your opinion, what are the most important qualities or skills that make a successful tattoo artist?
"We have to always be client focused first, remember it’s your clients that live the rest of their lives with your work, it can be easy to allow compliments or what-not go to your head and some artist can fall prey to ego. But I believe trying to keep more about clients and building great relationships will always serve you well in the long run."
How do you ensure a balance between staying true to your artistic vision and meeting the client's expectations for their tattoo?
I feel that taking the time to understand your clients vision for their new tattoo in the initial consultation is crucial. Sometimes people don't always know how to phrase what they are searching for and it's our job to gently coax it out of them sometimes.
Can you share a particularly meaningful or significant tattoo experience you've had with a client?
My most memorable client story, I have this one lady that has been coming to me for 4 years now. She initially came and got a rather small tattoo. It turns out she was testing me for a much larger piece. She has a rather large section of her arm was substantially covering in self-harm scaring. Doctors had only ever really offered her skin grafts. During that first tattoo we got to talking and she asked for an opinions or options that I could provide. We ended up covering the majority of her arm with her favorite flowers and blacked out the background, mostly free hand to manipulate how your eye perceives the scars. Over these four years of knowing her and watching her come out of her shell as a result of the confidence that sleeve gave her.
